California Recognizes Longer Fifth Wheels as Motorized Vehicles
Earlier this fall, the Governor of California signed into law an amendment to the motor vehicle law for fifth wheel RV’s, allowing the limited length to be extended to 48ft as opposed to the previous 40ft.
Before, the law only recognized fifth wheel travel trailers as motor vehicles if the kingpin to rear axle was 40ft or less on a 2 axle RV, or 38ft max on a 1 axle RV. The California DMV worked with the RVIA on this legislation beginning in 2012 as a result of issues with the California DMV and the RV industry. Before legislation was passed, there was no industry standard or limit on the length of fifth wheel travel trailers in the RV industry. However, the California DMV did not allow RV’s over 40ft in length to register with the state as a motor vehicle.
This new legislation, allowing the extension, takes effect January 1st
